LA Eats and Texts That Humble You To Your Core
An LA wedding, food, and friends. Oh and a hippo who enters the dating scene.
Hopped off the plane at LAX and thought wtf is this. The American Terminal is heinous. I was immediately sweating because the sun was out and I was unprepared for that level of UV. I overheat easily and love the cold, so you do the math.
Ok, I need to get my head out of my butt and give a real recap but my current situationship is driving me to the brink of insanity and I’m taking it out on LAX. I’ll just psychoanalyze him in the group chat later. Now that that’s settled, LA was a blast!
West Coast… Best Coast?
No, but this trip will go down in the history books because WE DID NOT MISS when it came to eating our way through the city. We did have a few watery americanos (Oslo would never), which we pretended never happened as we charged forth to the next coffee shop. If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.
The first half of the trip included our cousin’s stunning wedding and our dad working out in public places. Downtime consisted of being in traffic and eating delicious meals.
For the second half of the trip, we stayed in a bizarre Venice Airbnb that didn’t have a working entrance but did have a jukebox on the fridge. It’s a give and take. Good thing we had places to be with our LA tour guides, and her dog, Pepper. We had an epic day that started with coffee and bagels and ended with gossiping outside Erewhon. Does it get any better??
Our Favorite LA Spots
Nic’s on Beverly - Order a table pancake (an order of pancakes for the table, as the name suggests) and never look back.
Pura Vita - The carbonara was insane.
Thai Vegan - No frills, just above average pad thai.
Gracias Madre - Spicy vibe and spicy margs.
Erewhon - Was like floating through the gates of heaven. Everything’s fair game and the price doesn’t matter.
Just What I Kneaded - The cinnamon roll. Again, THE CINNAMON ROLL.
Layla Bagels - Sourdough bagels with fresh af toppings and a delicious cardamom latte.
Street Cart Fruit Cup - Get it with tajin and chamoy after being unprepared for a strenuous hike.
Maru Coffee - Sara’s fav coffee spot that got the stamp of approval.
Groundwork Coffee - 10/10 vegan breakfast burrito and the smoothest cold brew.
A Funny Story that has to be Mentioned for the Sake of Humanity
To follow our own advice, we’re stepping into the whole “putting yourself out there IRL.” Brace yourself for this one and don’t let it discourage you!
Julie slipped a note to a hot bartender with her number. By Julie I mean Amy and by slipped I mean our friend yelled his name while Julie ran away and Amy handed him a note with Julie’s number saying “this is from my sister, bye.” A complex plan that only a select few could have executed to perfection.
The group effort paid off because Julie got a text from him. But where there’s a high, a low is soon to follow! Just read it for yourself… THE ONLY BOY TO ASK A QUESTION AND THIS IS THE ONE!? Cmon.
So if you’re ever feeling down about your dating life, just remember that I got left on read after being questioned into thinking I might be a hippopotamus.
Don’t Let The Set Backs Set You Back Too Far
And that’s on motivation! There’s no recipe this week because as soon as I, Amy, saw the tarmac at JFK, I developed an illness and Julie is still mentally recovering from the hippo incident. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. See you next week for a new delicious recipe and more embarrassing stories.
Ugh I need to go back to LA. Last time I was there, in 2019, I had the best food time ever - but some of these places, like Pura Vita, weren't around. I loved Gracias Madre, Crossroads, Double Zero, and Sage.
